Analysis of the Quake Live German EPS Part II

Now there are only few days and the 16th edition of the german ESL Pro Series is going to start. The EPS is the most prestigious Pro-League of eSports (atleast on this side of the globe, in the U.S. it's the ESEA and MGL) and that's not only counting for Germany. In a total of 13 european countrys (and parts of them lying in Asia) the top local Cyber-Athlets messure in popular eSports disciplines like CounterStrike 1.6, CounterStrike: Source, Warcraft 3 or Call of Duty 4 for hardware or prizemoney and twice in a year determine their countrys top-players or -teams. In Germany we already reached the Season 16. The game-list is almost the same as in Season 15, but only almost. Amongst CS 1.6, CS:S, WC3, FIFA 10 there is a new one on the list, its name is Quake Live. The game itself should be fammiliar to everyone in our clan (we have a own squad in it). But I can imagine that some of you don't foll'ow the competetive scene of it that detailed (In my opinion little sad because QL-Duel matches are some of the most exciting ones in the complete eSports-Biz, but I will discuss Quake Live as a eSports-discipline in a separate article). So what I will try to reach with this article is to present you the current EPS, its participants and their chances for top-places in it. Have fun reading:

7. Cris 'dk' Torrents

With his 29 years dk is the oldest payer in the field. He is one of the oldest German quakers and has reached several Top-spots in different tourneys but not in duel yet. His main focus always was on TDM and that'S where he shines (he even got first place in Clanbase Nations-Cup TDM Q3 once). He definitely can aim and time well but has a big lack of 1on1 experience.

Chances in this EPS: Top 8

8. Niko 'RE1PA' Rehor

The second foreign player in this German EPS. He comes from the Czech-Republic but lives in Germany permanently. He plays in all ESL-Ladders (EAS, 1on1 international and Germany) but hasn't reached big places yet.

Chances in this EPS: Top 10

9. Alexander 'razr' Haus

He's a very active and good duel-player (he didn't miss one Zotac Cup till now). He has great talent and shows it in the online-tourneys he plays but still he has trouble to overcome the big names like av3k, strenx or calipt so he usually places Top 10 - Top 6.

Chances in this EPS: Top 6

10. Peter 'cYmoZz' Sellmaier

The new guy. He qualified trough the last qualification-tournament. He definitely has some talent but he also needs to learn a lot.

Chances in this EPS: Top 10

11.-16. Tornado, slax, majo, psyr3x, oldshatterhand, abso

All of these players are eighter not well known or good and so judging them is pretty difficult. All of them can cause an upset but most likely they will fight over the ranking in the lower part of the gird.

Chances in this EPS: Places 11-16 and relegation-tournament

1. Marcel 'k1llsen' Paul

k1llsen has been around in the international Quake 3-scene since it's begining. He's a verry talented player and a versed competitor. His greatest success were 2nd Place ESWC Grand Finals San José (Q3) and 2nd Place Kode5 Grand Finals @ GC-Leibzig (Quake 4). Recently he placed top 3 in a lot of online Tournaments like Zotac Cup and Intel Game On Cup.

Chances for this EPS: Top 5 atleast (pretty shure slot for the offline-finals)

www.k1llsen.de

2. Mikael 'PURRI' Tarvainen

PURRI is a top-player since the good old Quake 2 times. He did well in Quake 2 and Quake 4 and decend in Quake 3 so far. At the moment he's living in Cologne, Germany. That's the reason why he can compete in the german EPS.

Chances for this EPS: Top 4 for shure, because of his huge stack of skill and experience in competing at top class tournaments and leagues.

3. Felix 'Smoke' Pafel

Smoke is one of the so called "new generation" in Quake. Although he already competed in Quake 3 tournaments in 2004-2007, big succes came to him only in the past two years. He is verry talented but doesn't put practice and his pro-gaming career on first place (that's the reason why he can simpy afford to quit a top-level-tournament like IEM 4 without any good reason).

Chances in this EPS: Top 5 or even top 3 if he will put enough effort into it.

4. Benjamin 'calipt' Jakob

And another german top competitor. Calipt was around in the quake scene since the new millenium but had a break form 2004 till 2007. His focus was always on Quake 3 but he couldn't achive top places in international competitions till now.

Chances in this EPS: Top 4

5. <s>slain3</s> Oleg 'BoBel' Tews

Here is the first drop-out of this season, slain3 can't play because of thime issues and will be replaced by BoBel. BoBel is a well known player in many games. But he had the most success in Painkiller:Resurection and War§ow, two verry movement-heavy Duel games. He definitely knows how to move fast but doesn't have that much practice in VQ3 mode.

Chances for this EPS: Top 8

6. Philipp 'reload' Kotecki

Again a War§ow-player, and one of the best in it (won the Dash4Cash Lan in Paris last year). He's only 17 years old and probably the youngest player in this EPS. He also knows how to move verry smoth, but also has some kind of leak in Quake 3 physics and gameplay.

Chances in this EPS: Top 6- Top 8 (if he has practiced enough in the last month even Top 4 is possible)
